Abstract

A happy new year 2025 to all my readers. My first article will dwell on the Power of Now and Gamification of Life.

‘Carpe Diem’ – Cease the day. You only have the present to act. Tomorrow may never come and the past is gone never to be reclaimed. Once you understand this fact you will realize it’s of no use dwelling in the past and also living in the future.

You work with what you have now. The past is gone and the future is only a promise. Do your best work NOW. Make each moment epic and be grateful for what you have. What we don’t realize is that we only have now.

Do your best today and sleep without regret. We only have two questions to ask ourselves every day this year. What can I do to live up to my full potential today? Have I lived to my fullest potential today?

Farming Philosophy- Seed Germination Rate

Successful outcomes are also probabilistic outcomes. You can only skew the possibility of an outcome in your favor but you are not guaranteed a successful outcome each time.

The real winners in life enjoy the process. They give their best effort to have successful outcomes but do not regret the results no matter what happens. If the effort is sincere with no underhand means and methods employed they don’t fret and regret.

When a farmer plants seeds they know not all seeds will germinate and flourish. The germination rate might be as low as 70%, other extenuating factors beyond their control might interfere with the overall outcome of the germination process.

They also understand this when raising calves and other young animals. It’s always guaranteed a certain percentage will die and not see adulthood no matter what effort they employ.

They can only do their outmost best to ensure the animals are raised in optimal conditions. Successful harvests are not taken for granted but the farmer executes thier best effort no matter what happens

Business Philosophy – Provision for Loss

Any astute entrepreneur understands that they will always have to set aside a provision for loss in their balance sheet statement. Life is not a linear path you will have accidents and incidents occur that lead to loss of goods, refunds to customers etc.

A business will do it’s best to serve it’s customers and ensure their needs are fulfilled in the most consistent, timely, cost efficient, effective and profitable way.

They will get this process wrong in some instances but will tilt the probability so that the good happens over 95% of the time.

Understanding this philosophy in life will help you come to terms with the actual realities of life. It’s a probability and numbers game which leads me to the next segment of this article

Focus

The power of NOW is literally having the ability to focus on a task at hand and not let your underlying thought patterns distract you.

Carpe Diem- ‘seize the day’ should be our motto for 2025. This phrase is part of the longer carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero, which is often translated as “Seize the day, put very little trust in tomorrow (the future)”.

The ode says that the future is unforeseen and that one should not leave to chance future happenings, but rather one should do all one can today to make one’s own future better

Human beings are the only animals with the known ability to visualize and create future states. This ability is what has led to human development but also undermines our capability at the same time.

We can get distracted predicting and playing out future scenarios that will not materialize. We also have powerful memories that let us revisit traumatic incidents and replay them constantly over and over again.

This also undermines our capacity to focus on the task at hand. Focus is what leads us to accomplish the tasks on hand. Without laser focus we undermine our efforts.

Giving halfhearted effort at our current tasks only leads to bad outcomes in the future.

Gamification of Life

The individuals, families, societies, clubs, communities, companies and nations that succeed in the long run understand the power of now and the role of probabilities and numbers in the long run.

They know what counts is doing your best now, developing, retaining best practice and processes as long as possible. They know constant improvement and leveling up matters over time. They treat life and business as a game.

They put the effort in numbers. They know that with multiple attempts they will succeed and have a breakthrough sooner or later. They understand perfection is the enemy of progress. The name of the game is constant and never-ending improvement.

Gamification is another way to make goal pursuit instantly gratifying. It involves making something that isn’t a game feel more engaging and less monotonous by adding game like features such as symbolic rewards, a sense of competition, and leaderboards.

Gamification works when players “buy in” to the game. It can backfire if players feel the game is being imposed on them.” ― Katy Milkman, How to Change: The Science of Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be

They apply the power of goals, metrics and objectives over the long term. They harness and leverage the power of these concepts to have distinct and great experiences over the long term.

Summary

I did write an article in 2024 on the power of belief. You have to believe in your ability to achieve your goals and surpass them. With this plan, focus, execute and enjoy the process. Gamify the process to enjoy it.

Sow the seeds off greatness every day. Never get discouraged by the everyday setbacks or obstacles you will face, just keep striving ahead.
