Abstract
The foundation, direction and drive of all human beings is based on their belief system. Thoughts propel our actions. This is why religion, culture, influence and communication matter in everyday life. We are swayed by the opinions of those we believe and trust in.
Filters in life are very important. We have both physical and mental filters we deal with in our everyday lives. Of particular importance are filters that affect our perception of reality and how we relate to the world.
These are our attitudes, beliefs and biases. Cultures in different countries are really a collection of the prevailing beliefs, attitudes and biases inherent in different communities. These are all filters that affect how we deal with our environment.
We live in communities and we have to adapt and adjust to the communities we live in. Knowing and respecting the prevailing cultural bias and perceptions helps you live in harmony with your neighbors.
The positives about keen awareness about your community and culture is that it helps you as an individual, run comparisons with other prevailing beliefs and cultures in other societies.
You can cherry pick and adopt the beliefs and culture that can help you thrive. I touched on this earlier on an article about the Feeds in our lives. To prosper and thrive we really need to be careful what we feed into our minds.
Ear Phones Story
I am old school and prefer to have wired ear phones with the jack input into my phone. I am still not a convert to wireless ear phones. This week I had an issue with my normal ear phones. I had to buy low quality ear phones as an emergency measure.
I tried listening to some music on these ear phones. The quality was so poor I just had to unplug the earphones and store them away. It had made the music I love awful and tasteless. This brought into mind the importance of great acoustic filters and sound.
The difference between high quality ear phones, speakers and low-quality equipment can actually make your day bright or ruin your day.
Relation to our own mental bias, attitudes and beliefs
This event brought to life how our beliefs, perceptions and attitudes affect our lives. If we do not have the right filters we will have distorted perceptions and approaches to the reality of life.
Just changing earphones was enough to change the quality of the music output. This is also how our perception and beliefs affect us.
Belief and Confidence
The greatest families, communities, nations, businesses, scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, performers, all have one thing in common. They all have utter and unshakeable belief in themselves.
They know that without belief and confidence in their abilities nothing else happens. The greatest gift any parent can instill in their children is belief and confidence in their abilities.
The greatest coaches, managers and leaders do one thing they instill belief and confidence in their teams as the first measure of business.
We can build technical skills over time but an individual, team, community or nation that does not belief in their own abilities is doomed in the long run. Having great talent without confidence usually minimizes the impact of the talent.
There are many hidden talents out there who cannot flourish as they have no belief in their talent and skills. When we encourage them to perform the outcome is always better for society and the nation in the long run.
