“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” —Pablo Picasso

“If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes.” —Andrew Carnegie

“All successful people have a goal. No one can get anywhere unless he knows where he wants to go and what he wants to be or do. ” —Norman Vincent Peale

Why do the most successful people, teams have goals and plans?

The most successful people, teams, corporations and nations in the world set specific goals, live by their goals and would die achieving their goals. Executing strategic and tactical plans are the bread and butter of the most successful individuals and entities.

Coca Cola, Nike, Addidas, Morgan Stanley, HSBC,  would have fallen off the landscape if they were not executing their strategic  plans to the letter. The leading nations in the world-  USA, China, Japan, Singapore, Germany, Great Britain etc are all reknown for executing strategic plans well.

The famous NAVY seals, SAS, Rangers special forces teams rely on proper mission planning and execution. They do not execute missions which have not been well planned and thought through. They do not leave anything to chance.

As I have previously stated in the Mindset Series to be the best you have to model the best. You simply cannot coast along in mediocrity and have wish washy thoughts. The best plan for their success and do not wait for luck to hit them.

Please take note of that statement carefully. The best of the best set goals. They would literally die to achieve their goals. The rapper and TV producer 50 cents had a goal to get rich or die trying to get rich. It was a sin for him to die poor. With this goal he is one of the richest personalities in the world.

Just get a model of who you think has lived a great life and note their goal setting and achievement process.

A goal is simply a target with a deadline. It can be a set of personal, business, family, community or national objectives /targets. A goal is neutral it can either be positive or negative. Goals all begin and stem from our individual thoughts and visions of a state we would like to be in the future.

SMART Acronym

One of the most popular goal setting theories is the Acronym SMART which is broken down to:

S – Specific    The more specific you are the more likely you will attain it. Our minds detest broad goals. Example I want to be thin and healthy is not a goal. No you need to set a baseline I will have shed 20 kgs by a certain date and maintain my weight at 72 kgs.  IMPORTANT Please state it as if you have already achieved the target

M – Measurable – You need to measure goals. Once you are specific then set the metrics to measure and achieve your goals. How many kilograms do you need to shed today, this week, this month? What daily exercise routines will I perform? What diet will I embark on? Have I planned my meals to the letter? What are the maximum calories I need to eat per day?  Plan it as a do or die mission and do this methodically.

A – Achievable – Aim for the highest benchmarks that have been achieved but start with what you can realistically achieve.. Model what the best have achieved. After that set the basic level or fundamental level you need to achieve and build from there. You have watched kids playing games. They do not go straight to level 10 but always start from level 1 building up to level 10.  Once you reach level 10 you can start exploring the outer edges of your goal. Start aiming to break records and the impossible. Stay Hungry

R – Realistic-Always start with the fundamentals, achieve this level then aim for the next level. There are some goals that are dependent on you attaining other goals. They stack up like dominos. Once you conquer the first goal, then conquer the next goal. Be always realistic about any situation you are in. Do not ignore your current skill sets, current resources.  What do you need to do to cover for these weaknesses and play to your strengths.  Do you need to outsource certain tasks?  Raise funds? Hire a team? Partner with other individuals? Get a mentor

T – Timely– Goals have to have deadlines. The pressure of deadlines works wonders. Most of us are ardent sport fans. The majority of sports set a time limit within which games have to be played. Individuals or teams have to win within these set time limits. This reality of set  timelines ensures teams strive to win within this set time frame.
