Standards and Expectations

“Our environment, the world in which we live and work, is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations.” – Earl Nightingale

“High expectations are the key to everything.” – Sam Walton

“Don’t join an easy crowd; you won’t grow. Go where the expectations and the demands to perform are high.” – Jim Rohn

Standards and Expectations

Back to the theme of closure of the year and looking ahead to 2024. If we do not set high expectations and standards for ourselves we fall down hard. I follow soccer and I support the English Premiership team – Manchester United.

The team was knocked out of the European Championship League this week (10th – 16th Dec 2023). When I analyze the malaise of the club, it can all be traced back to allowing its standards to fall. The management and players have not set their standards and expectations high enough.

The hunger to win

It is quite clear the team lacks the hunger to win. The attitude of the players on the pitch and the results this season show no desire to win any significant trophy. The players clearly do not respect their current coach and management.

The current owners have never ingratiated themselves with the fans. It is clear there is a division between the fans and the management team. This apathy, acrimony and division has resulted in a crisis that will have to take drastic and radical surgery to get sorted out.

Application to our lives

When we set low standards and expectations for ourselves we also suffer. Individuals, families, communities, organizations and nations have to set high standards.

You can tell the difference between individuals who set high standards for themselves and those that do not live to any standards. Attributes such as punctuality, a strong work ethic, integrity and resilience are key attributes of individuals who set high standards.

The same attributes can be applied across the board for communities, organizations and nations. They need to ensure they aim high enough to ensure they give purpose to their members. Without lofty and high standards, the current lifestyle and innovations we enjoy would never have been possible.

Visionaries like the Steve Jobs, Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Elon Musk, Nelson Mandela, the American founding fathers etc. had high and exacting standards. Apple, Tesla and other products we enjoy are the result of high standards and expectations set.

Champions always live up to the highest expectations of themselves. They demand the best from themselves. Mohammed Ali, David Goggin, Lee Kuan Yew, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Rodger Federer, Pep Guardiola etc.

Summary

What standards and expectations do you want to live by? What bar have you set for yourself and loved ones for the year 2024 and beyond? It’s critical we ensure we always set and maintain high expectations and standards for ourselves.

Investigate and take a look at the most organized, successful individuals, organizations, communities and nations. They set the most ambitious, highest, grand, lofty goals, standards and expectations. Always keep learning from your environment
